Graded music theory courses
The heart of the One-2-Five
music theory program is the graded courses beginning
with the 'Prep-Level' and continuing through five
further grades. Each grade is designed to complement
corresponding music theory qualifications such as ABRSM,
LCM & GCSE. All five grades consist of 4 courses packed with essential rudimentary musical theory and knowledge of composers and musical instruments (each course includes 1 composer and 1 orchestral instrument). Quizzes, tests, flashcards and aural challenges feature where necessary and of course each grade culminates in a final exam. If successful, candidates may download a certificate.

Composers through the Ages
There are currently over 100 composers on the website from the 'Renaissance period (1400-1600) through to modern times. Each composer page highlights important details of the composers life, works and any other relevant and/or important information is included. Each composer page may include about 10 videos, several audio files and even downloadable sheet music. There are quizzes and tests specifically for the more prolific composers. Important composers are included in the graded mini-courses.

Instruments of the Orchestra
This section includes all the relevant information you will ever need on orchestral, band and other common musical instruments. Every instrument page features a brief summary, illustrations, range and tuning information and points of interest. Videos and audio files are always featured and sheet music links are often added for you to download. You can also learn about the layout of orchestras at different times throughout history. There are some general quizzes to test your knowledge which include sound and others involving dragging items into boxes but this area really serves as an excellent 'mini-wiki'.

History of Music
The history of music is obviously and enormous subject but we have managed to condense it into 7 'bitesize' chunks making it accessible and easier to grasp. Covering almost 700 years we begin with the 'Renaissance' and finish up late into the 20th Century so early music, baroque, classical, romantic and modern periods get a good airing. There are quizzes on each page to keep you up to speed. This section is kept as brief as possible but there are the usual links for students who wish to study at a deeper level.

Flashcards
We are slowly building new style quizzes using the mTouch plugin. To encourage the art of fast sight-reading we have allowed just enough time to complete the test if youre smart enough. And to help you get there in time the cards will advance automatically after the answer is given. There are tests on notes, (treble and bass clefs) leger lines, intervals and triads. The intervals may include tests on major, minor, perfect, diminished and augmented types, but more advanced tests include 'alto' and 'tenor' clefs. Triads may be based on 'theoretical' 'roman numeral' or 'jazz-style' chord symbols with all types of clef.

Glossary of music terms
This is not the Oxford dictionary of Music but a simply a handy refence area for any musical term likely to appear (as a question) in most music theory exams up to grade 5. Words in common musical usage deriving from Italian, German, French and English are included along with baroque/classical forms etc. as well as terms specific to the orchestra and individual instruments.

Harmony
Another enormous subject where we took on the challenge of producing a short course whereby students receive much more than an introduction into the understanding of the amazing study of Bach harmony and 4 part writing. This course will more than 'whet the appetite' but in a practical way launch an interested student into one of the most fascinating and rewarding areas of music.

Music Copyrights: Some of the
audio files and streams have been obtained from websites offering
royalty free public domain music or with Creative Commons licenses. The
use of these files on this website is purely educational and are not
available for download. However, it has occurred to us that although the
compositional rights may be in the public domain, performance rights
could still be an issue and until we can be certain the copyrights are
in order we will be replacing some files with our own productions. If
you recognise your own performance on any of the audio files, please let
us know and we will either delete the file or credit you with a link or
text.
Enjoy the new videos and high quality sound
files.
The program
This program is effectively THIS ENTIRE WEBSITE on
your computer and will prepare you for most
music theory grade examinations in the U.K. and many
other countries with similar curriculum up to
Grade 5. It is designed to cover the minimum of
requirements and to be reasonably comprehensible to children and
adults who have at least started learning a musical instrument. It is
not meant to replace paper and pen methods but this type of learning
does have the advantage of live 'sound' and fast links to the entire
program. Because of this we are including Aural (ear) tests throughout
the program. Having said this, please do not neglect using pen and
paper. Links are given to sites where more specialized information is
available and if you are a complete beginner then study the first
section
The Prep-Level
and then follow the links as you progress through the levels. If you are
sitting external exams with a UK based exam board then look for the
logos for a more specifically targeted syllabus
Buying a password:-
We hope you like the free website and enjoy learning more and more
about the magical world of music and if you are a private music teacher
then no doubt you will benefit greatly from this added dimension as
children today are well used to tackling homework and assignments online
and on their PC.
We designed the website originally for our own (private) pupils but
realized that this resource could be of use by anyone involved in
music education whether school, academy, college or
private educator. This entire website is contained within the
downloadable program which can be used offline in its own stand-alone
browser.
The small fee for your password to open the entire course will help
us to keep the project going and to further develop and update the
technical side of things so please buy the password for the
One-2-Five e-tutor as these contributions help to keep this
site going, and keeps us motivated to improve things (we have plenty of
ideas but may need to employ some added expertise in order to bring them
to fruition).
By the way, if you have already done so, thank you for purchasing
the E-book password!
