INSTRUMENTS of the ORCHESTRA – The Cello
The Cello has a beautiful, expressive, mellow tone and is crafted from maple, spruce and even fibreglass nowadays.
The strings are steel and usually played with a bow or sometimes plucked with the fingers.
The Cello is the second largest member of the string family and an important part of the orchestra. It has four strings C-G-D-A which are tuned an octave lower than the viola. The beautiful tone produced is often said to correspond with the human bass voice.
Please watch the videos below to hear examples of music made famous by the Cello.

Hi! Shouldn’t the ‘tuning’ note be an A on the staff instead of a G (although it is correctly ‘spelt’ as A)?
Thank you Leo, we hadn’t noticed that error!
