Flashcard Tests
We are slowly building new style quizzes using the mTouch plugin. To encourage the art of fast sight-reading we have allowed just enough time to complete the test if you’re smart enough. And to help you get there in time the cards will advance automatically after the answer is given.

- This minor scale is based on the ‘harmonic’ scale, which means that the 7th (‘leading’) note is sharpened. This creates 2 ‘diminished’ triads and 1 ‘augmented’ triad. Triads are created by building ‘thirds on top of each other – Major triads consists of a major 3rd (bottom e.g. C-E) below a minor 3rd on top (e.g. E-G) C-E-G = C major.
- Minor triads are similarly built but with a minor 3rd at the bottom but the major 3rd at the top. e.g. A-C (minor 3rd) + C-E (major 3rd) = A-C-E (A minor triad) The lower minor interval gives the chord its ‘darker’ (or sad) quality.
- Diminished (dim) triads have 2 minor intervals which makes the triad a semitone smaller than the majors and minors. The chord has a feeling of suspense and impending drama.
- Augmented (aug) are built with 2 major intervals which makes this triad a semitone greater than the major and minor chords and a whole-tone greater than the diminished. The chord is bright sounding and demands forward movement.

- Root chords have the root or key note in the bass or lowest position. In the C major triad above we have coloured this note red. Notice the ‘shape’ of the root triad (notes are positioned on the next nearest line or space).
- In the 1st inversion of this triad the bass note (red C) is moved to the uppermost position of the chord (an octave higher) creating a 4th interval between G and C. Notice how this ‘wider’ interval reshapes the triad.
- The 2nd inversion has the blue ‘E’ (the 3rd) at the top of the chord and now we have the wider interval at the lower part of the triad visually.
